Years involved in Special Olympics: 1 year as a volunteer…many years as a fan/spectator
What is your volunteer position: Track and Field Program Volunteer
How you became involved: A very special friend of mine, Lauren, is involved in SOBC and I use to go and watch her in many different sports. When her Mom became Head Coach of Track and Field, she asked me to help her out I said, “Yes” .
What you like about volunteering: I have always been involved in Lauren’s life and have always enjoyed watching her sporting events. To be asked to help coach SOBC Track and Field was an honour for me. Showing up at practice and being a part of such an enthusiastic group of adults and lending a hand helping and watching the athletes’ succeed and meet their personal goals, be it big or small, is such an inspiration to me and makes me a better person.
Most memorable moment of event as a volunteer: I have many memorable events as a volunteer of SOBC but 2 come to my mind. The first event was being in the stands at the Summer Games in Abbotsford and cheering on athletes’ who I personally assisted from the North Shore that were competing. The second event was attending the Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Games. It was absolutely amazing seeing all the athletes marching in from all the different regions and the pride that they all had for themselves and their fellow competitors.
