YEARS INVOLVED WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS: This is my second year with Special Olympics!
WHAT IS YOUR VOLUNTEER POSITION: Social Coordinator for the dances, softball and soccer volunteer.
HOW YOU BECAME INVOLVED: My sister has been with Special Olympics for many years and I had some spare time and a dad who needed some extra hands coaching the softball team! I liked it so much that I started helping with soccer as well and eventually was asked to coordinate the dances.
WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT VOLUNTEERING: The athletes, of course, and the other volunteers I have met and become friends with. My favourite part is seeing the commitment, dedication, team spirit and sportsmanship that the athletes have.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OR EVENT AS A VOLUNTEER: I have three. First, was the softball tournament with the “B” team. Even though the team didn’t come in first, it sure felt like they did. Second, was the soccer tournament with the “B” team. I’m not sure if it was because of my wicked sunburn or because the team was phenomenal – either way the entire weekend was a blast. The third was the very first dance (the Halloween dance) that Donna and I set up. I was so nervous that I would forget something or that no one would want us to do the next dance, but it turns out we didn’t do half bad!
