FUNdamentals

Season: September – April

The Special Olympics Fundamentals program (ages 7-11)  is one of its kind in Canada, in that it provides specific training and educational opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities, many of whom do not have any other avenues for structured physical fitness. The FUNdamentals program is also designed as a continuation for those participants that have graduated from the Active Start program and are looking to develop more specific related skills that will contribute to sport participation in the future.

The Fundamentals Program relies on the rational that if children with intellectual disabilities are provided early instruction in the areas of basic motor skills and developmentally appropriate play that there is an excellent opportunity for improvement in physical, social and cognitive abilities.

The FUNdamentals program also rests on the idea that caregivers will take the educational information presented and provide similar opportunities in the home environment for their child.
