~ Submitted by SOBC – North Shore Basketball Coaches Zak Klein and Jimmy Peterson

In an effort to give teams more competition before the Regional Qualifier, Coquitlam hosted a fun tournament on February 4th. SOBC – North Shore took two teams to scrimmage.

The first team competed at the “B” Level. Zak Klein served as Head Coach with Assistant Coach Bob Jeanes. Despite a shaky start in the first game, the team came back and played very well in their second and third, claiming victories in both.
- Nick Kellof was a strong leader and proved to be the MVP of the day. Nick also played in the “A” Game;
- Steve Schoeller scored more than ever before, proving a dominant offensive player as well as defensive;
- Tyrone Liebenberg had more rebounds than the rest of the team combined and also added some critical points;
- Erol Gunenc did a good job of distributing the ball to his teammates. He also demonstrated good shot selection;
- Siann Montgomery shared her usual strong defence and added to the scores;
- Billy Peterson showed improved shooting skills and was as scrappy as ever. At one point, he even shut down an opponent three times his size;
- Dennis Lee rose to the challenge of playing in a higher division, helping the team to two victories;
- Tina Palkowski was excellent and did everything that was asked of her and more;
- Kara Williams, also playing a division up, handled the ball well and made some key plays;
- Pierce Burns once again displayed strong defensive play and also exhibited an improved offensive game, although playing in higher division.

Team Two led by Head Coach, Jimmy Peterson, and Assistant Coaches, Aliyah Chouinard and Peeter Tammark, competed in the “C” division. They, too, started slow against a Surrey team that played well and hit some tough shots from the perimeter. They had good participation throughout from all players and responded well with 2 decisive wins, placing 2nd place with a 2-1 record.
- Ryan Taylor only played one game, his first ever, and he scored a beautiful breakaway basket and skyed for a couple of rebounds;
- Mary Ann Saunders played point guard for a little bit and did a good job passing the ball. She also had the best shoes at the tournament;
- Kristina Tammark did a good job as point guard, especially defensively staying in front of her checks, often checking 2 players at once;
- Rafael Greenaway was a defensive stopper;
- Lindsay Hall got an assist;
- Kristina Bridgen was the MVP in her first tournament after only one practice, scoring 18 points;
- Christie Tilton worked really hard and scored a hoop;
- David Shoring had great off ball movement and defence, and also scored a hoop;
- Sangeon Yoo was the fastest dribbling down the court and had a couple of steals;
- Alex Evanshen did a great job rebounding.

Everyone enjoyed the day and is anxiously awaiting the 2nd Annual March Madness Basketball Tournament, this year’s Regional Qualifier, where they will once again meet up with these teams and fight for a chance to represent SOBC – North Shore at the 2013 Provincial Games!

~ Submitted by SOBC – North Shore Basketball Coaches Zak Klein and Jimmy Peterson

January 28th proved to be a great day for SOBC – North Shore Wildcats. Head Coach, Zak Klein, led a caravan containing two teams to the ferry terminal. Sangeon Yoo had his car laughing so hard that Zak proceeded to miss the ferry turnoff leading 7 other vehicles toward Whistler. The two teams arrived, however, unscathed to the terminal with time to spare and a new story to share. Together they anxiously sailed to Langdale and then proceeded to Elphinstone Secondary School, where they were kindly welcomed by the Sunshine Coast coaching staff and athletes. The Wildcats proudly donned their new uniforms and received many compliments on their new bright look. They definitely made an entrance.

Both teams did exceptionally well. Zak Klein, along with Assistant Coaches, Brent Yager and Connie Kidd coached their team to an undefeated first place victory.
- Dennis Lee was magnificent in every aspect of the game. Steals, blocks, rebounds, assists, points…he did it all;
- Pierce Burns proved to be a dominant force on the defensive end making many stops and giving his team lots of extra possessions;
- Sangeon Yoo played basketball like the Green Goblin finishes his enemies…”Nice and Easy” (in Green Goblin voice);
- Rafael Greenaway was very valuable both on and off the court – a true veteran. He demonstrated great leadership, excellent communication and led his team wisely;
- Bill Halsall, when he wasn’t showing off his new uniform and his number 29, was getting rebounds and shooting hoops;
- Graham Kidd moved more than ever before showing an increased understanding of the game;
- Jeff Keast played the best he ever has making smart shot selections and selflessly passing the ball to create some great scoring opportunities;
- David Shoring dazzled everyone, not only on the court with his basketball skills, but also in the ferry lineup on the way home with his sick dance moves. He’s “sexy and he knows it”…so does everyone who took the 6:30pm sailing out of Langdale;
- Emilie Narcise defended exceptionally well as always, keeping her check scoreless;
- Lauren Philley added to her team’s record by scoring a basket in the third game.

Jimmy Peterson served as Head Coach of Team Two. Shawn Philley and Chelsea Kidd assisted. Many thanks to Shaheen Khayambashi who also assisted. This team won the first two games quite easily, but was too small in the third game; yet the players competed hard against a couple of bigger players. They almost came back to win in the last 3 minutes with an 8-0 run, but lost by 2 points as Aiden’s shot almost tied the game at the buzzer. They ended the tournament in 3rd place with a 2-1 record.

- Jeremy Sellars was asked to play as a post and did a great job despite being the smallest inside player at the tournament;
- Wayan Lantela improved his shooting compared to last year and continued his solid defensive play;
- Kristina Tammark had the most heart and played amazingly, at one point scoring on 3 straight possessions;
- Mary Ann Saunders had a couple of beautiful assists and danced up and down the court;
- Kara Williams distributed the ball involving numerous players in each game;
- Alex Evanshen scored some nice baskets, had some steals, and showed solid rebounding skills;
- Aaron Lewis worked hard moving quickly up and down the court and scored in his first tournament ever;
- Tina Palkowski was a monster on the court finding her spot on the wing and scoring multiple baskets, on top of numerous steals defensively;
- Mary McLaughlin did a nice job getting open on the perimeter and making simple passes inside that led to a couple of baskets by Tina;
- Aiden Fisher-Lang had a blast on the court, and used his anticipation on defence to lead to nice hoops in transition.

The Wildcats played extremely well and once again showed terrific teamwork, as the majority of athletes scored. A pizza dinner was shared while watching David dance. The coaches congratulated everyone’s stellar efforts, summarized their skills and handed out certificates on the sail home. A great day was shared by all. Thank you to the drivers for getting everyone there and back safely: Zak/Brent, Peter, Shawn, Carmel, Diana, Shaheen, Katie, and Kevin!

~ Submitted by Ally Bateman, SOBC – North Shore Head Swimming Coach

The North Shore Annual Invitational Swim Meet was held on Sunday, November 20th, and was a great success. We were so pleased with the turn out of both athletes (122) and volunteers (approximately 25). Our athletes tried their hardest and were lead in their Athlete’s Oath by the North Shore’s own Belinda Lyle. We are so pleased to offer the first swim meet of the year which is an opportunity for many of our new swimmers to try a meet for the first time, and for our more experienced swimmers to get back into competition mode, especially since this is a qualifying year.

We also took the opportunity to highlight the North Shore’s new Sport Start swimming program with an exhibition race including our new young athletes. They really enjoyed being part of the team and having the opportunity to see what a real swim meet looks like.

We, once again, ran a card-less meet, which is really the best way to go for fast results. With the help of Barb Mathieson and Kim Whaley, the marshalling area was a breeze and the athletes were clearly directed on where they needed to be. Our starters and officials Joe Elsinga, Eduardo, Mark Logan, Sue Logan, Alexa Logan and Juan kept the meet running smoothly and professionally. A big thank you to Penny O’Rourke and Ron Lloyd for organizing our timers from the Progress Club. Our North Shore alum Corrie Carlile, and her mother Joan, were our runners and made sure all timers and officials were running on schedule. James Shannon, Adam Kouwenberg and Amy Fisher ran the results at break-neck speed and had all the results and ribbons ready within 15 minutes of the end of the meet.

We had a lot of fun and were able to include all of our athlete ability levels in our competition, which made it a rewarding experience for everyone.

A special thanks to our team of volunteers Jen and Barb Mathieson, Jim and Susan Juilfs, Tanya Kostadinova and Jen Wiebe for packing our bag lunches (thank you Allison Hall for purchasing the items for the lunches) and donating food for our timers and deck officials.

We hope to see you all back at our meet again next year!
