SOBC – North Shore is extremely proud of all the participants, especially our very own Wildcats, Lynx and Pinks. Each Head Coach has summarized their experience:

~ Zak Klein:  The NORTH SHORE WILDCATS started things off right! As the host local, the Wildcats played in the first game of the tournament to get things started and boy, did they ever! Right from the jump ball, the North Shore were on a mission to show that Sutherland was their house and opponents were going to have to work hard if they wanted to compete. Unfortunately for the Langley Warriors B, they were first up to learn this. Defence, as per usual was the Wildcats strong suit. Any opponent who entered the key was punished inside. It took Langley 5 minutes before they scored a basket. Great defence leads to easy offense and that was abundantly clear. North Shore looked silky smooth in transition. The pattern became very predictable: get the stop, fast break, score. The team played very cohesively, often making the extra pass or even 2 or 3. In the first game, every Wildcat had a look for a scoring opportunity. It was great to see such teamwork. The second game also consisted of a powerhouse performance from the Cats, as they dominated the Coquitlam Adanacs. Each member played great, contributing something positive to the outcome of the game. Tina Palkowski and Joshua Moon represented the Wildcats in the lunchtime shooting competition and both did well. Tina scored a number of shots, but not quite enough to get her first place. She finished third in the female division…Good Job, Tina! Joshua “Monster” Moon was phenomenal missing his first couple attempts but sinking 10 in a row after that. He tied with Karl from Langley Warriors B and earned the title of Shooting Star, way to go Josh! After a great first day of competition, everyone involved with the North Shore Wildcats (athletes, coaches, parents and supporters) was feeling good. The second day of competition opened up for North Shore, but not in the same fashion as the day before. The Burnaby Panthers proved to be a tougher competitor! The game was back and forth all the way through, with each team exchanging baskets. The Panthers extended their lead in the fourth quarter to 7 and the deficit proved too great to overcome, but the Wildcats made a valiant effort in trying to do so. With Burnaby defeating the defending Champs, it meant a 3rd or 4th place finish for the Cats was up ahead. The North Shore anxiously awaited the revealing of their foe…Campbell River. The game was another nail biter and could have gone either way. In the end, Ken Sloan proved to be too much of a scoring machine, at times beating double teams, helping to secure the victory for Campbell River Waves 2. The Wildcats have nothing to be ashamed of and everything to be proud of. It was a hard fought tournament and each player did well! Next year Burnaby and Campbell River will not get so lucky! Highlights of each player’s weekend are listed below:

Nick “Killer” Kellof – His defense was stellar. He forced his opponent to commit many turnovers and shut them down on the majority of possessions. As good as his defense was, his offense was even better! Nick was a machine when it came to scoring baskets. Sometimes, Nick would drive to the hoop for a layup, others he would crossover and pull up for a 20 foot jumper. He demonstrated calm and composed leadership, involving all of his teammates in play. It was an easy choice for the coaches to make, as they all decided to reward Nick with Best Offensive Player in the division.

Joshua “Monster” Moon – “12…Really? 12?!” “Are you sure?” YES! It’s difficult to believe that Joshua is only 12 as he plays well beyond his years and was already running the show for the Wildcats! Josh was fantastic all weekend long. He was such a headache for opponents because there was no answer for how to stop him or how to stop him from stopping them. Although he was the smallest player on the court, he played the biggest. Since Josh was new to the Wildcats’ roster, none of the other coaches knew his name.  Now they ALL do, even those in other divisions. If ever there was a loose ball, Josh was the first one to it; whether he was diving on the floor for it, fighting with guys who were bigger than him or out jumping 6+ footers, he was there. It was very obvious that teams were frustrated with him, as they started to foul him hard. Obviously, it didn’t affect him.  He just kept going and playing basketball hard and with heart!  His defense was absolutely smothering and was a large reason the Wildcats were so competitive! For this reason all the coaches decided to award Josh with Best Defensive Player and there was nobody more deserving of the title!

Steve “Speed Demon” Schoeller – Steve displayed strength, speed, athleticism and hard work. He did a tremendous job of using his strengths to help his team. Normally, Steve’s speed can be a bit too much to harness, but he did a terrific job of rushing down the court and then slowing down to sink the layup. He often out muscled his check for the rebound to secure extra possessions for the North Shore. Steve showed the best ball handling we’ve ever seen from him, keeping the basketball nice and controlled and in his possession.

Erol “Game Face” Gunenc – Erol played good defence, coming away with breakaways from steals on numerous occasions. Erol did a good job of slowing down the tempo of the game on offence. He also did a great job of drawing fouls, as he got to the free throw line more than anybody else in the division.

Billy “the Beast” Peterson – As always, Billy was a little, feisty scrapper out on the court. No matter how big an opponent, Billy stepped in their way and forced the difficult play. Billy was a great team with Nick running the point and ensuring that each play, the open man got the ball. His tenacity was matched only by Josh. The two of them were the smallest but most fierce back court in the B division!

Tina “Put Back” Palkowski - In her first season, Tina made the jump from C to B and did wonderfully adapting to the more competitive environment. She was great on the offensive glass grabbing multiple rebounds and getting the North Shore extra chances to score. Each time down the floor Tina was the first to get into position and set up in the offensive end. She did an excellent job of sticking with her check and not allowing them to score, many, if any points at all.

Tyrone “the Terror” Liebenberg – Tyrone was a presence, even when he wasn’t involved in the play. His size alone, caused many opponents to alter their shots. Ty grabbed a lot of rebounds and especially on Day 1, had a lot of put backs. Tyrone sprinted down the floor each possession and helped to setup the offence and defence.

Dennis “Korean Kobe” Lee – After playing at the C level, Dennis jumped to the B level and did very well. He always stayed with his man and shut him down. Although many of them did not fall, his shot selection was excellent. He never forced a bad shot, just took open looks.  Dennis is only 16 years old and promises to be a force to be wreckoned with.

Danielle “Jump Shot” Juilfs – She demonstrated superior ball handling skills. Many times Danielle would be relief to Nick or Billy who would get double teamed. Danielle brought the ball up and facilitated well. Even though she was smaller than her check 99.9% of the time, she did not let them push her around.  She stood her ground.

~ Mazdak Mehrabi: The NORTH SHORE LYNX started the tournament with high energy and in good spirits. Everyone was very excited to be in his/her own hometown hosted tournament. Unfortunately, the Lynx didn’t place in the top 4 as they had hoped but finished with two losses and a tie. The Lynx finished the tournament strong, exhibiting great strength and determination. Despite their record, the players possessed an amazing vibe that couldn’t help but be noticed. They showed great sportsmanship and walked away with their heads held high.

Alex Evanshen – Alex lead the team defensively, grabbing numerous rebounds.

Bill Halsall – Bill was a monster inside the paint and led the team in scoring.

Rafael Greenaway – Rafael demonstrated terrific leadership skills, spurring the entire team to play cohesively. He was very vocal and always remained positive.

Aiden Fisher-Lang – Aiden grabbed many steals, taking them all the way to the opposite side of the court.  He had great poise in the breakaways.

Mary McLaughlin – Mary stuck like glue to her checks, not letting them out of sight. Defensively, she shined.

Christie Tilton – Christie played very well defensively and repeatedly found our players underneath the opposing team’s basket.

Carissa Ranson – Carissa did a wonderful job running to the offensive side and getting open.  She demonstrated outstanding improvement in play and overall understanding of the game.

Graham Kidd – Graham made himself open to be passed to and it was obvious he developed quite a bit.  He showed more movement and attempted shots than ever before.

Emilie Narcise – Emilie showed great hustle throughout the tournament and could always be counted on to be in the right place.

~ Jimmy Peterson: The NORTH SHORE PINKS played wonderfully throughout the tournament, finishing in 2nd place in the C division. Although they lost the championship game to a very athletic and powerful Ridge Meadows team, the Pinks defeated Langley, Abbotsford, and Campbell River to finish with a 3-1 record. There were some outstanding individual performances in the tournament, as well as passing plays that led to terrific hoops. Other coaches commented on how terrific the passing and teamwork was on certain plays. Each player on the team recorded at least one hoop or one assist in the tournament, and gave great effort defensively.

Pierce Burns – The best offensive player of the tournament. He scored 22 points in one game alone! Pierce was terrific converting his strong defensive play into fast break opportunities at the other end, and worked extremely hard in each game.

Kristina Tammark – The best defensive player of the tournament. She also contributed a number of baskets offensively, but her willingness to rebound and go after loose balls led to her outstanding play all along. Kristina recorded steal after steal and rebound after rebound despite being one of the smallest players on the court.

Jeremy Sellars – Jeremy also received some votes for his stellar defensive play. He was feisty down low, guarding players almost twice his size. Jeremy was running extremely hard up and down the court, and often blocked other teams’ fast break opportunities.

Siann Montgomery – Siann, as usual, was good defensively around the key. However, most impressive was her offensive rebounding and shooting at the tournament. Siann scored in 3 of the 4 games, and was a vocal leader for her teammates.

David Shoring – David played a solid tournament, in which he scored a number of hoops and assisted on a number of others to his buddy, Pierce! David was versatile, as he was called on to play many different positions (at one point scoring on 3 straight possessions as a point guard for the team).

Sangeon Yoo – Sangeon was unable to play on the second day due to illness, but he shined on the first day, especially in the second game against Abbotsford. At one point, Sangeon stole the ball from the opposing point guard on four straight possessions, which led to easy baskets for the Pinks. Sangeon’s speed was missed on the championship day!

Jeff Keast – Jeff had an exceptional tournament, playing strong defence and distributing the ball well. He got a number of steals and played aggressively, but was composed offensively.

Aaron Lewis – Aaron scored a hoop for both the North Shore and the opposing team! He worked really hard running up and down the floor, and was an accurate shooter.

Mary Ann Saunders – Mary Ann got an assist and included some new dances as she moved up and down the court! She has improved defensively with her footwork and positioning.

~ Zak Klein: The NORTH SHORE SKILLS COMPETITORS, Lindsay Hall and DeneRosang, demonstrated outstanding skills sets.

Lindsay Hall – Lindsay received ribbons in 3 of the 4 SKILLS competitions, claiming one first place and two second’s. Lindsay absolutely dominated the Spot Shot.

Dene Rosang – Dene placed in all 4 SKILLS competitions, taking two first places, a second and a third. Dene excelled at Spot Shot and Target Pass.
